I think they are trying to make Facebook a more sociable site.they could make people meet or interact with other through hashtags not just with their friends but with other people as well.

only the posts with public visibility (and of course the ones you are permitted to see) are shown in the hashtag feed. So you cann comment on the ones that are shown.
and yes, it’s just a start. it’ll be a while before one can use it productively.

But how does hashtags help in discussion? It’s not twitter, where you can stumble anywhere and write what you think. I mean, you still gotta like pages, join groups and make friends to have those ‘permissions’ facebook famously maintains. Maybe, it’s a start. But it just seems awkward for now.

that’s an interesting line of thought.
yea, graph search and hashtags would go together really well. because then you didn’t have a context of what you were searching for, and now you do. i’d never thought about it that way.

It actually makes sense to me, the graph search then hashtags. if you really think about it, you could do pretty cool stuffs using both. hashtags will give the search a better way to segment their posts, and people can search for them later easily.. because you’ll remember them better! where now there’s a newsfeed when you search for a hashtag, maybe they’ll make a timeline for it. and you can go to particular dates and see the usages..

yes Hodor, i agree with you. But definitely not due to the public pressure. (The pressure on getting a ‘dislike’ button has been along for a long time)
Facebook owned instagram, was using hashtags already. maybe they have plans to integrate them somehow more closely. Or maybe new features to highlight discussions ARE going to arrive. Maybe, facebook just can’t stand twitter having so many users. 😀

Maybe facebook succumbed to the public pressure or something, but still, this new feature by facebook is a bizarre idea. Agreed, both twitter and facebook are social sites, but somehow they serve entirely different purposes. Like you mentioned, twitter is more open, more public. It’s harder to keep track of what the people are talking about, hence the hashtags.
In facebook, I reckon it’s just for those ‘targeted’ ads.
If I have to rate it, I’ll have to go with ‘useless’..
